Dyslexia/SpLD Assessments for Children

Our brilliant team of dyslexia specialists work with the child or young person and their family to support them through the journey of the assessment process.

They work closely with other professionals, where necessary, whilst listening to the voice of the child and their families. The areas of work will be unique to each individual and their families.

Dyslexia Support for Children

Our Dyslexia Support Specialists offer diagnostic assessments and can offer recommendations based on the areas of difficulty to ensure that your child gets the right support throughout their education.

We are very used to liaising with educational settings (primary and secondary schools), NHS and other professionals involved with your child as well, if you want us to. By letting us know what you are looking for and the needs of your child, we can match you to the most local person within our Dyslexia Support Team.

Full Educational Assessment

A full educational assessment looks into all areas of an individual’s cognitive processing and attainment in order to determine if a diagnosis of dyslexia can be given.

Prior to the assessment you will be asked to complete some forms about different areas of your child’s developmental history and their educational history. The assessments typically take 2-3 hours depending on each individual child. We try to keep the assessment process as relaxed as possible, taking regular breaks and carrying out the assessment over two sessions if needed.

Following the assessment, you will receive a full report with opportunity to talk through any queries or questions further. The full report includes a diagnosis, if appropriate, with an explanation of each area tested and how this fits a dyslexic profile. The report will also include a full list of recommendations for Exam Access Arrangements, the classroom setting, individual or specialist support and ideas to help support your child at home.

If there is no diagnosis you will receive a full report on each area tested so you have a full profile of your child’s strengths and weaknesses with insights into how your child learns best and if there are any specific areas of difficulty, such as a slow processing speed or memory difficulties along with a full list of recommendations.

1 to 1 Support Sessions

1-1 support sessions are offered to support individuals with specific learning difficulties, or who need specific support in the key areas of English, study skills, planning and organisation.

Prior to sessions beginning targets will be set and agreed. If the individual has had a full educational assessment, this can be used to set targets. If this is not available, it will be necessary to carry out an initial assessment to ensure that the level of support is correct.

The frequency of sessions is decided on between you and your specialist. Typically, sessions are weekly and last 30 – 45 minutes online. You can work in 6-week blocks and pause for a week or two or keep going weekly until your child has completed their learning journey. Our experienced team is constantly monitoring your child’s progress in order to keep them progressing.

A main focus is also on having fun and enjoying sessions, so there will be lots of games tailored to your child’s interests that target the exact areas they require to develop.
