ADHD Medication Shortage

Unfortunately, due to global supply issues, several ADHD medications have been facing shortages since September 2023. These supply challenges stem from increased demand, changes in manufacturing companies, and discontinuation of certain strengths or products. As a result, patients are experiencing difficulties in accessing essential medications.

Update: 13th July 2024

Unfortunately, there are ongoing difficulties with sourcing all 12-hour preparations of Methylphenidate Hydrochloride, this includes medication such as Concerta XL, Xaggitin XL, Delmosart and Xenidate XL.

This is not expected to be resolved until September 2024. There may be small supplies locally, but we cannot guarantee this, so please discuss with your clinician regarding your treatment plan options. We understand this is frustrating but your clinician will be able to work with you to form a solution. These circumstances are out with our control.

Update: 19th March 2024

As of 19th March 2024, we want to inform you that the medication shortage is ongoing. While some stock is improving, it remains a nationwide issue. We are taking all the steps to keep in touch with the manufacturers and in turn, we will ensure we keep you updated.

The national shortage of the stimulant Lisdexamfetamine Dimesylate is set to be resolved by approximately April 2024, however, this is just a guide. Only one company called Takeda produce this medication at present. Currently, Lisdexamfetamine is available in all strengths nationwide however there may still be localised stock issues. This shortage has been due to issues with their production but has also been impacted by the increase in demand nationwide.

As a result of the shortage of Lisdexamfetamine, this has had a subsequent impact on other ADHD medications. At present there is a significant shortage of the alternative stimulant Methylphenidate Hydrochloride, there are generic and branded versions of this medication available, hence why it can be prescribed generically, allowing for more access to what’s available in the pharmacies.

Presently there is a limited supply of some of the 12-hour prolonged-release medication, medications such as Concerta XL, Xaggitin XL, Xenidate XL and Delmsort which may be impacted locally by the ongoing shortage due to demand.

We will endeavour to update you as and when we know more information. Please be assured we will try and accommodate your needs as best we can.

The non-stimulant medication, Intuniv, also produced by Takeda, stock remains variable. The non-stimulant Atomoxetine is also under pressure, with various strengths being unavailable at present. We have had no update from Strattera who produce Atomoxetine to update us.

You can find further information on the availability of medication on SPS website.
